surveys, measuring & quoting
Is the home survey really free?
Yes — completely free, with no obligation whatsoever. Our surveyor visits your home, measures every window, shows you samples, and provides a full written quotation. There's no charge for the visit regardless of whether you place an order.
Do I need to measure my windows before calling you?
No. Our surveyor measures everything professionally during the free home visit. Measuring your own windows before calling us can sometimes lead to ordering errors, particularly in older properties where windows aren't perfectly square. Let us do it.
How long does a home survey take?
For a typical three to four bedroom home, a survey takes around 45 minutes to an hour. We'll measure every window you're considering, discuss your requirements for each room, show you fabric and finish samples, and answer all your questions before providing a written quote.
How quickly can you survey my home?
For homes in Saltash, Plymouth, Torpoint, and the immediate surrounding area we can often offer survey appointments within the same week. For homes further afield in Devon or west Cornwall, typical availability is 1–2 weeks. Contact us and we'll confirm your specific area.
How long does it take from ordering to having my blinds fitted?
Most made to measure blinds take 3–5 weeks from order to installation. Motorised blinds and specialist products (apex, shaped windows, some plantation shutters) may take a little longer. We'll confirm your lead time at the point of order.
buying & choosing blinds
What's the difference between made to measure and ready-made blinds?
Made to measure blinds are manufactured to your exact window dimensions — cut precisely to fit inside or outside your window recess. Ready-made blinds come in standard sizes that will almost never match your window exactly, leaving light gaps at the sides and an imprecise finish. Made to measure blinds from Rogers cost more upfront but look significantly better, last longer, and work more effectively.
Which blind type is best for a bedroom?
Blackout roller blinds are the most practical choice for most bedrooms — they're the most effective at blocking light and are available in hundreds of colours and patterns. For a softer, more traditional look, blackout Roman blinds are beautiful and equally effective. We recommend cordless or motorised operation in children's rooms for child safety reasons.
What are the best blinds for a kitchen or bathroom?
For kitchens and bathrooms, moisture resistance is the priority. We recommend wipe-clean roller blinds in moisture-rated or PVC fabrics, or faux wood Venetian blinds (unlike real wood, faux wood won't warp or swell in a humid environment). Avoid fabric-rich blinds like Roman blinds in kitchens where cooking vapours are present.
Can you fit blinds to unusual or non-standard window shapes?
Yes. We supply and fit blinds for triangular, hexagonal, circular, and irregularly shaped windows — including apex and gable-end windows. See our Apex, Shaped & Roof Blinds page for more detail. Our surveyor will assess your window during the free home visit and recommend the most appropriate system.
Do you supply plantation shutters?
Yes. We supply and fit a full range of plantation shutters — solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, and premium MDF — in a wide choice of colours, louvre sizes, and configurations. Shutters are available as full-height, café-style, and tier-on-tier panels, as well as shaped panels for arched and other non-rectangular windows.
How do I clean and maintain my blinds?
Most roller, Venetian, and vertical blinds can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Roman blinds and fabric-rich blinds should be dry cleaned if required — avoid soaking fabric blinds as this can distort the structure. Plantation shutters can be wiped with a dry or slightly damp cloth. We provide care instructions for every product at the time of installation.
motorisation & smart home integration
Are motorised blinds much more expensive than manual?
A battery-powered motor adds approximately £80–£150 per blind to the cost of a manually operated equivalent, depending on the motor specification and blind size. Over the lifetime of the product, motorised blinds often represent similar or better value than repeated manual replacements — they're less susceptible to mechanism wear from rough handling.
Do I need an electrician to install motorised blinds?
Not necessarily. Our battery-powered motorised blinds require no electrical installation whatsoever — they're charged via USB-C and require no wiring work. Mains-powered motors do require a 240V spur routed to the blind head rail, which needs a qualified electrician. We'll advise on the best power option for each window during your survey.
What smart home systems do your motorised blinds work with?
Our Somfy-powered motorised blinds are compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit (via bridge), Somfy TaHoma, Lutron, Control4, Savant, Crestron, KNX, Loxone, and Rako. We work with your AV integrator where required to ensure seamless integration with your existing system.
Can you add motorisation to existing manual blinds?
In some cases, yes — particularly for roller blinds where a motorised tube can be retrofitted. However, it's often more cost-effective to supply new motorised blinds. We'll advise on the best approach for your specific blinds during a survey visit.
patio awnings & outdoor shading
What types of awning do you supply?
We supply retractable patio awnings (open-arm and full-cassette), electric and motorised awnings, pergola and freestanding canopy systems, and commercial awnings for hospitality and business premises. Our main brands are Markilux and Gaviota — two of Europe's leading awning manufacturers.
What is the difference between an open-arm and a full-cassette awning?
When retracted, an open-arm awning leaves the fabric and arms exposed. A full-cassette awning retracts the fabric and arms completely into a protective box housing, shielding everything from weather and UV. Full-cassette awnings maintain their appearance for longer, require less maintenance, and are far better suited to exposed and coastal locations. We recommend cassette awnings for all Cornwall and Devon coastal properties.
Are your awnings suitable for coastal and exposed locations?
Yes. We specify marine-grade acrylic fabrics (such as Sunbrella) for all coastal installations — these are UV-stable, mould-resistant, and resistant to salt air. For exposed locations, we recommend a wind-rated full-cassette motorised awning with integrated wind sensor, which automatically retracts the awning when wind exceeds a safe threshold.
How large can a patio awning be?
Standard retractable awnings are available in widths from 2m to 6.5m, with projection (depth) of 1.5m to 4m. For larger coverage requirements, multiple awnings can be installed side by side, or our freestanding pergola systems provide a wider-span alternative.
Do awnings need planning permission?
In most cases, no — retractable awnings are typically covered by permitted development rights for residential properties. However, listed buildings and properties in conservation areas may require consent. We can advise on this during your free home survey.
How do I maintain my patio awning?
Never retract a wet or damp awning — always allow it to dry fully in the extended position first. Clean the fabric 2–3 times per year with warm water and mild soap. Inspect fabric seams and arm joints at the start of each season. We recommend retracting the awning in winds above approximately 25mph — a wind sensor automates this for motorised awnings.
coverage, installation & aftercare
Where are you based and what areas do you cover?
We're based in Saltash, Cornwall, PL12 6TW. We cover the full Cornwall and Devon region — from Exeter and Salcombe in the east to beyond Truro in the west, and from Rock and Padstow on the north coast to Plymouth and the South Hams on the south. There is no travel charge for home surveys anywhere within our standard service area.
Do you use subcontractors for installation?
Never. The Rogers team measures, supplies, and installs — always. We never subcontract installation work. This means you deal with the same company throughout your project, and any aftercare requirements are handled by the people who did the original installation.
Do you offer a guarantee on your blinds and awnings?
Yes. All products come with the manufacturer's warranty, and we offer a workmanship guarantee on all installations. If anything isn't right after we've fitted your blinds or awning, contact us and we'll return to resolve it promptly.
Can you fit blinds to a commercial property?
Yes. We have a dedicated commercial service serving offices, schools, NHS facilities, restaurants, hotels, and retail premises across Cornwall and Devon. Commercial clients receive contract pricing, flexible installation scheduling (including out-of-hours fitting), and can order fire-rated blinds to BS5867 standards.
Can you fit blinds to a holiday let or rental property?
Yes. We regularly work with holiday let owners and landlords across Cornwall and Devon. We can coordinate with property managers, work between lettings, and specify products appropriate for high-turnover use. Ask about our letting property pricing.
What if I need an adjustment or repair after installation?
Contact us directly. Being a local business based in Saltash, we're never far away. We take aftercare seriously — if something needs adjusting or a component needs replacing, we'll arrange a return visit promptly.
