Allusion blinds guide

choosing an allusion blind

Allusion is Louvolite's answer to the vertical blind. Soft vanes of sheer and opaque textured fabric hang from a slim headrail, so it reads more like a curtain than an office blind. It suits wide windows, patio doors and bi-folds, where you want daylight and a view out by day and privacy in the evening. It filters light rather than darkening a room, which matters when you choose where it goes.

How an Allusion blind works

The vanes hang vertically, and a single wand does both jobs. Twist it and the vanes turn to let in more or less light; pull it sideways and the blind draws across or stacks to one side. Open, you get soft filtered daylight and a view of the garden. Closed, nobody can see in. Because the fabric is soft, you can walk straight through it with the doors open instead of drawing it back each time, which is what makes it so well suited to patio and bi-fold doors. Louvolite makes them up to five metres wide.

Louvolite recommends the wand for everyday use, and it leaves no loose cords or chains hanging by the door. We also fit Allusion motorised, on a rechargeable battery motor, so there is no wiring to run to the headrail.

The four fabric collections

We offer all four Allusion collections, all 100% polyester. Horizon is the most delicate and sheer, in five shades from Chalk to Pewter. Natural has an organic, textured weave in five warm neutrals from Sand to Dark Grey. Shadow is denser and more structured, in Black, Sand, Stone and White, and gives more privacy from the street. Vista has a smoother, more modern finish in five colours from Snow to Raven, and it is the only flame-retardant Allusion fabric, which is worth knowing if a specification calls for one.

Where it works and where it doesn't

Louvolite rates every Allusion fabric as light filtering with no darkening performance, Shadow included. So an Allusion blind will soften the light but won't darken a bedroom for sleep. If you need the room dark, add a blackout roller behind it or choose a different product for that window. The fabrics aren't moisture resistant either, so we wouldn't put one in a bathroom.

Where Allusion does earn its place is on a wall of glass. Plenty of homes in Cornwall have wide doors facing the sea or a south-facing garden, and the coastal light can be fierce. Allusion takes the glare off without shutting the view out, and it looks soft and finished when drawn back.

common questions

What is the difference between an Allusion blind and a vertical blind?

A standard vertical blind uses single stiff louvres that turn and stack. Allusion hangs soft vanes of sheer and opaque fabric, so it filters light more gently and looks closer to a curtain. The practical difference is on doors: you can walk through an Allusion blind with the doors open, where a vertical blind has to be drawn back first.

Can an Allusion blind black out a bedroom?

No. Louvolite rates all four collections as light filtering, including the denser Shadow range. Shadow gives you more privacy than Horizon, but light still comes through. For a bedroom you want dark, fit a blackout roller behind the Allusion or choose a blackout product instead.

Are Allusion blinds safe with young children?

They are one of the better options. Louvolite designs Allusion to be child safe and recommends the wand, which tilts and draws the blind with no looped cords or chains. Every blind we supply is compliant with EN 13120 and the BBSA Make It Safe guidance, and we check the controls are right for the room when we survey.

Can you wash Allusion fabric?

It depends on the collection. Louvolite says Natural and Shadow can be hand washed but not machine washed, while Horizon and Vista shouldn't be washed at home at all. A light dust, or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment, keeps most blinds looking right.
